The Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2012, also abbreviated as WCS 2012, was a Yu-Gi-Oh! Official (OCG) and Trading Card Game (TCG) tournament that was held at the Tokyo Midtown Hall from 11 - 12 August 2012, being the most prestigious and final event of the 2011-2012 season. It was held alongside the Yu-Gi-Oh! Dragon Duel World Championship 2012.
This World Championship was historic for being the first one to not include a Video Game tournament as well as the first one to come with a Dragon Duel World Championship.
The tournament's format was largely dominated by the "Inzektor" strategy, with half the competitors using the deck. As the tournament progressed, other strategies fell more and more behind, and in the end, the entire Top 4 was just "Inzektor" decks. In the finals, Akikazu Saito from Japan managed to take the win against Stefano Memoli from Italy. A young Joshua Schmidt, who would go on to become one of the most renowned players in the world the following years, finished in third place. Wesley Seek from Singapore made fourth place.[1]
Among the non-"Inzektor" players, there were several interesting strategies being used at the event. Perhaps most notably, Jarel Winston from the US piloted his "Chain Exodia" deck all the way to a Top 8 finish, only losing to the eventual winner of the tournament.
The metagame at the Dragon Duel event was somewhat different. Here, "Inzektor" only managed to take the silver medal, played by Toya Minami from Japan. His opponent in the finals, and first ever Dragon Duel World Champion, Yu Hao Liou from Taiwan, used a "Dino Rabbit" deck. The two semifinalists also used rogue strategies: Zachary Leverett from the US finished in third place with "Hieratic", while Brandon Medrano from Mexico took his "Final Countdown" deck to a fourth place finish.[2]
