Nomination

I am nominating myself. I have been with this Wiki site for a while now and would like to be able to have the tools needed to correct issues as I find them. To be able to delete older obsolete images that are no longer relevent (For example an image with a logo on it when it has already been replaced by an image without a logo. I accept my own nomination Glittersword TalkContributions 22:13, July 18, 2011 (UTC)

Result - unsuccessful
Unsuccessful, but the intermediate usergroup proposed at Forum:Some new usergroups should hopefully help. -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:57, August 27, 2011 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve as an administrator. Please answer the following four questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What administrative work do you intend to take part in?
A: Mostly deleting older images and general housekeeping issues. Anything truly complicated I will forward on to someone else.
2. What do you consider to be your best contributions, and why?
A: The images that I have cleaned up in order to look better. removing white borders and making the resulting image a smaller file size in the process. Some images are just taken too far in one extreme or another. Either they are too small with no detail but have been forgotten about or the image is way too big and needs to come down a level that still shows the details but isn't such a hassle when it is re-sized to a gallery image. While some have not agreed that my images were an improvement in the past, my skills are improving and I do not take it personal when the opinion differs. If someone really disagrees they should tell me and I will revert/delete it myself if that is the consensus.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: I had one tiff in the past with FredCat100 but it has been resolved and I get along fine with him now. If there were any others, I really don't remember.
4. Do you regularly contribute to any other wikis? Are you an administrator or bureaucrat on any of them, or do you have accounts with similar roles on forums, blogs, etc.? Could you provide links, if so?
A: The only other one I have admin status on is my own http://glitterswordyugi.wikia.com/wiki/Glittersword%27s_Variant_Yugioh_Ruleset_Wiki it has my own ideas and while anyone can edit as any other site, until now i have not promoted it at all and am it's only contributor. It gave me the ability to back up the images I found here and save my edits where if my computer went down I could still have access to them. The core concept though is a work in progress.

Other editors may post optional questions for the candidate here.

Questions from Deltaneos

Questions. -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:10, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

5. What types of images do you forsee yourself deleting should this request be successful?
Top priority goes to those that have other websites logos plastered on them but ONLY if they have been replaced by non logo images that are of better quality. Also the images that are practically microscopic and if you blow them up you just get blocky shapes instead of images and words. Again only if they have been superseded. The images make OK placeholders but nothing else. The bad thing is in a lot of ways they are a bigger problem than they first seem while I am thinking about it. While they ARE there they keep the image from appearing on the list of cards that need images.
6. Do you feel you have much experience outside of image-related edits?
I have done edits in galleries putting in codes for the cards not listed. A lot of times we have them they are just not in the gallery. I have also added the listing for a card in the main card page when I notice they are missing AND I find the information somewhere else on the site that shows they should be there. If I can't find good verification on something though I will leave it alone. For example was a certain set released in Portuguese? If I don't know I wont speculate because it might cause confusion further down the road.
7. Have you been involved in many community discussions?
I have not been involved as much as I probably could, I tend to get focused on my current projects. lately I've been more involved in trying to Down Load copies of the image files so I can have an archive of them. I really would hate to see in 20 years that Konami has stopped producing and interest had died down to the point the rulings were not available readily anymore. Back to the point. There are a lot of topics I don't really have much to say about. I don't really do deck edits or answer rulings questions. It seems that a lot of the more substantial discussions are on the major contributor's talk pages. It is just that there is a lot that needs to be done here. The day sometimes disappears while you are working and you still don't seem to have made a dent in what you wanted to do. Right now it is 10:30 and I have to go to work tomorrow at 6:00 in the morning. So I am heading off to eat and sleep. (The section below was finished first of course.)
By community discussions, I mean ones that are geared at changes to the wiki like the wiki discussion forum, deletion/protection discussions etc. Deck help and ruling queries, while not a bad area to contribute to, isn't something too important to administration, so I wouldn't worry about not contributing there. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:27, August 1, 2011 (UTC)
8. If a user who has been in conflict with you is causing trouble, what is the minimum offense you think they could make that warrants a block and what steps would you take?
If they keep civil during the conversation and accept correction nothing needs done. However you did say "Conflict" If they start being insulting and using foul Language that I think would warrant a SHORT ban. If they continue to do the same thing time after time after being told not to, that would also warrant a short ban that would get longer after each occurrence. Permanent Banning though I would ask for a consensus from the other Admins. On something like that we would need to stand as one and back each others play.
9. This is a self-nomination. Although common, these are frowned upon on a number of wiki projects. What would you consider to be the advantages and disadvantages to self-nominations? Do you feel you would have been nominated by anyone else given time?
It brought to your attention that I was interested to begin with. I see it as being no different than submitting an application for a job in order to get an interview. As to the last part maybe I would have, maybe not no way really to tell for sure after all there are a lot of contributors to this wiki. However, even if I am not approved now it should make it more likely in the future, as I have made myself stand out slightly from the majority of contributors. You have noticed me now and nothing can really take that away. It is like that scene in the movies where the Sergeant asks for volunteers, I have stepped forward. Now the ball is in your court.
Questions from Wilimut

I can't really make my mind so here's a few questions. Wilimut TalkMail Paris, 17:47, July 30, 2011 (UTC)

10. If you're in a middle of a conflict. For example, a user keep reverting a file that you've uploading, stating that your version isn't the best. How would you react and what would you do?
Well first if it was one of you I'd take your word for it and try again.
Even if it wasn't one of you I would trust you guys to give me the straight scoop. I could also ask the general community for their example. However if worse came to worse I would protect it temporarily for a week or so and let the guy realize that it is a done issue. I would have to unprotect it in the end though so others can give us other options. After all if a third image comes in that is better than both the issue is moot. However there is some images out there that I would call perfect for the purpose. Straight and level clear picture, the right size. I think when we get to that point on a picture it should POSSIBLY be protected and have future contributers for that image upload it to an approved variant name File name possibly with Submission at the end of the name. That way we can decide if it is better and if it is to move it to the protected image page. Some are done lets get them to concentrating on other images.
11. A new user keeps uploading high quality files that were missing in the wiki without using the Image Policies. What would you do?
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If he won't follow the guidelines though... It depends to me on how active our generous contributor is. If he was going at a reasonable pace I'd add his Contributions to my followed page list and just review what he contributes as he goes. If he is really prolific though I might start falling behind so I might just ask him to slow his pace down a bit and let me catch up. I can put up with quite a bit if he is doing good work and filling in the gaps (Esp. in the early Japanese cards.
12. I'm not against more admins. It's always good to have more people using the tools (but with knowledge). IRL, are you more a calm and diplomatic person or someone who likes to have the final word when you think you're right?
Definitly the diplomat. I am more than willing to give in to a reasonable person who makes a good point. I know I am not always right. I just ask that if I come up with a suggestion that it is given careful thought and not just have it dismissed out of hand. There are some things I would have done differently IF I was around when we were starting out. However, I wasn't and inertia is going to have us continue on some of those paths. I know this and can accept it.
Personally I would have just put the Artwork on the main card page. as all of the current information on the card is listed off to the right anyway. This would have eliminated having to change the image link each time the card is re-released. I mean like how many times has that been done for Mystical Space Typhoon? That is called useless work If they want to find the CARD image that is what the card gallery is there for. However at this point it would be too much work to convert it over - unless it was just gradually phased in.

  • I'm really close to a Yes but I don't really see you around much apart from User Talk Pages. That's absolutely not a bad thing but to be a Administrator, you also need to edit on the "Principal" part. What's more, the job you want to do do not particularly requires the tools. If you keep working, it will be OK for me in a few months. Wilimut TalkMail Paris, 03:34, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
You are almost right. The only tool I don't have access to that I desire access to as a non-admin is Move-File so I can rename the files I find that are using the wrong name as I discover them without passing them on to you guys.
Example: ApprenticeWarrioroftheScrew-JP-Manga-5D.jpg shoud be ScrewturntheApprenticeWarrior-JP-Manga-5D.jpg. The File needs renamed and the Main card page needs its link re-connected (and the Gallery Page obviously.
Remember, an organization doesn't just have Administrators. They also have a Janitorial Staff. You guys can do the heavy lifting (education/discipline etc.) if you want. I just want to tidy up without bothering you guys every time I find something that needs switched over.

  • Sorry about the late comments.

The movefile right being restricted to admins is an annoyance. It and the page move throttle slow down a lot of editors making helpful contributions. I'm not really keen on giving adminship just to bypass those restrictions. It is possible to have a middle usergroup setup, which has some but not all of the admin access. I know that suggestion was brought up probably over a year ago, but not much of an attempt was ever made to have it implemented, so I don't blame you for requesting full adminship.

A few editors have disagreed with some of your edits where you upload new versions of existing images. Your willingness to discuss rather than revert their changes is very good. Although using admin access for image clean-up edits is likely to involve deleting duplicate images and your idea of which images are of better quality is a bit disputed, so you making first hand decisions on which images to delete might not go down well with other editors. I asked question 5 in light of my last point and I know you didn't mention deleting images quite like those in your answer, so it's not an especially strong reason to appose for.

I don't feel fully comfortable with giving you adminship. Although I don't see any problem with giving you the middle usergroup if we could set it up. Setting it up should just take a forum proposing the idea, enough editors in favour, enough editors who would benefit from it and the request passed on to Wikia. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:50, August 18, 2011 (UTC)

For images such as File:CrystalBeastTopazTigerFOTB-JP-R.jpg and File:CrystalBeastAmethystCatFOTB-JP-C.jpg, (along with Blackwings0605 and Rod) I also agree that the old image was much better. Although uploading a new version of the image can be done already, if I remember correctly, there were quite a few where you also converted to .png, and marked the better .jpg version to be deleted. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 02:01, July 19, 2011 (UTC)

Those two files have now been reverted back. On the other situation, I tend to take things at face value until told otherwise. As I understood it AT the time we preferred .PNG files ((Although I personally like .JPG) .PNG gives smaller results when comparing to .GIF files but the Files I made Into .JPG from .PNG without changing the file just converting under default settings gave smaller file sizes than .PNG.)) when I found out a situation wasn't exactly the way I thought it was, I did my best to change my posture in regards to the situation. I try not to make the same mistake twice, but it does sometimes happen. Glittersword TalkContributions 16:25, July 23, 2011 (UTC)
JPEG images have smaller file sizes than PNGs because JPEG makes use of a lossy compression algorithm, meaning information is lost when the image is saved. What's more, there is no way to disable this - it happens every time the image is saved in an image editor, even with quality options maxed out, meaning that over time, an image will lose detail and quality as it is edited (this isn't such a major concern with card images, which shouldn't generally need to be edited, but it definitely doesn't help when we get low-resolution, bad-quality images in the first place). PNG, on the other hand, uses a lossless compression algorithm, meaning it can be edited and saved ad infinitum without any loss of detail or quality from the saving itself (though that's to say nothing of the possibility that the person doing the editing doesn't know what they're doing =D ).
As for us specifically preferring PNG images, that seems to be something that TwoTailedFox instigated (and since then, as I have with so many other things around here, I proceeded to jump on it and really start forcing it down everyone's throat via templates and the like =D ). ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:30, July 23, 2011 (UTC)
If that is the case then the Image policy should state something like

.png is the OFFICIAL format, Other formats such as .jpg or .gif will be accepted on a temporary basis until a copy is uploaded in .png format. After that point the same file in any unofficial formats will be subject to deletion. There maybe some exceptions to this rule for images that relate to the core operation of the site. For example .svg files for Types and Attributes of monsters

Glittersword TalkContributions 17:18, July 27, 2011 (UTC)
While I agree in theory, I don't think I'd want something like that on a policy page, since it would ultimately only encourage people who don't actually know what they're doing to try converting images, or to try uploading JPEG images as PNGs (which the software doesn't allow), etc. Besides which, we're actually somewhat of the odd man out in preferring PNGs; most other YGO card sites use JPEGs almost exclusively. All in all, I think our current method of encouraging PNGs over other formats, both on the image policy page and in certain image templates, is probably the most ideal method, given the circumstances. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:28, July 27, 2011 (UTC)
