"The Next King of Games", known as "The One Who Succeeds Yugi" in the Japanese version, is the first episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh GX anime series. It aired in Japan on October 6, 2004, and in the US on October 10, 2005. An unspecified number of years after the end of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, the card game has become a worldwide phenomenon, with schools having been established for the purpose of training students to become professional duelists.
Jaden Yuki is a prospective candidate to enter the prestigious main branch of Seto Kaiba's Duel Academy. To that end, he must take an Entrance Exam to qualify, and on his way there, he encounters Yugi Muto himself, who gifts Jaden with a "Winged Kuriboh" card and wishes him luck. He ends up facing Vellian Crowler, one of Duel Academy's professors, in a Duel to gain entrance to the Academy.
Summary
Jaden Yuki is rushing to get to the Duel Academy Entrance Examinations, when he bumps into Yugi Muto who gives him a "Winged Kuriboh" card. He arrives late to the examinations, but is able to see Bastion Misawa win his Duel and meets Syrus Truesdale who has also won his duel on the sidelines. Bastion Misawa reportedly received top marks in the written portion of the entrance exam, unlike Jaden and Syrus who barely passed.
Despite Dr. Crowler's rejection, Jaden is allowed to complete in the entrance duel due to the order of Chancellor Sheppard. Jaden's opponent is Dr. Crowler, who uses his own personal Deck for the examination, rather than the examination Deck is he supposed to use. Student Alexis Rhodes feels that Dr. Crowler is picking on his adversary by playing with his own personal Deck. According to third year student Zane Truesdale, Dr. Crowler is rumored to have a rare monster card in his Deck. The duel ends with Jaden victorious over Dr. Crowler's "Ancient Gear Golem" to the surprise of Obelisk Blue student Chazz Princeton. Jaden is accepted into Duel Academy.

- Summons "Elemental Hero Avian" (1000/1000) in Defense Position.
- Sets a card.
Crowler's turn
- Activates "Confiscation", paying 1000 Life Points to check Jaden's hand and send one of the cards in it to the Graveyard. He chooses "Monster Reborn".
- Sets two cards.
- Activates "Heavy Storm", destroying Jaden's face-down "Draining Shield" and his two face-down copies of "Statue of the Wicked", whose effects activate, Summoning two "Wicked Tokens" (1000/1000) in Attack Position.
- Tributes both "Wicked Tokens" to Summon "Ancient Gear Golem" (3000/3000) in attack position.
- Attacks "Avian" with "Ancient Gear Golem", whose effect inflicts piercing damage (Jaden 4000 → 2000).
Jaden's turn
- Summons "Winged Kuriboh" (300/200) in Defense Position.
- Sets a card.
Crowler's turn
- Attacks and destroys "Winged Kuriboh" with "Ancient Gear Golem", with the effect of the latter reducing the Battle Damage to zero.[Notes 1]
- Jaden activates his face-down "Hero Signal", Special Summoning "Elemental Hero Burstinatrix" (1200/800) from his Deck in attack position.
Jaden's turn
- Activates "The Warrior Returning Alive", returning "Avian" from his Graveyard to his hand.
- Summons "Avian" (1000/1000) in attack position.
- Activates "Polymerization, fusing "Avian" and "Burstinatrix" to Fusion Summon "Elemental Hero Flame Wingman" (2100/1200) in Attack Position.
- Activates Field Spell Card "Skyscraper".
- Attacks "Ancient Gear Golem" with "Flame Wingman", with the effect of "Skyscraper" increasing the latter's attack points by 1000 (Crowler 3000 → 2900). The effect of "Flame Wingman" activates, inflicting damage to Crowler equal to his destroyed monster's attack points (Crowler 2900 → 0).
- Jaden wins.
