"First Duel", known as "Beautiful Harpie Lady" in the Japanese version, is the sixth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime. It first aired in Japan on May 23, 2000 and in the United States on November 3, 2001.

In his first Duel on the island, Joey Duels Mai Valentine, a professional Duelist who uses "Harpie Lady" as her ace monster. But even more dangerous than Mai's "Harpies" is her ability to predict every card she will draw.

Summary[]

Pegasus is sitting in his castle looking at his watch saying the duels have started, so has the elimination process. Only the strong will thrive and the weak will fall.

Outside Joey is excited and is ready to take on any challenge thrown at him even challenging the next person he sees. While Téa and Tristan are both hesitant about Joey playing as most of the players are at tournament levels. Joey however is still going to duel for his sister Serenity as they were close when they were little and while at the beach promised each other they would be there for each other. Joey tells himself he will win the tournament and prize money for her so he will bring her back to the beach like he promised. The friends then look over the hill and sees lots of stadiums and tournaments happening, they are amazed. Joey decides to go down and start dueling, while Téa and Tristan point out if Joey loses, he'll be kicked out but Yugi assures him, he'll do fine, he should go for easy duelists. Joey also thinks about which fields would be suited for his monsters and decides the meadow would work, which Yugi agrees with. The friends soon hear Mai's voice, who just beat a duelist, while he complains she's cheated, Mai just claims she's psychic and he lost. She sees the friends and is impressed Yugi has won a duel already, he says he's doing all right, Mai almost challenges Yugi but their surprise she wants to duel Joey. Mai explains that she overheard the two friends on the boat and knows he wasn't invited and is not good, while Joey is insulted, Téa points out Mai is right. Joey however wants to duel anyway, he may not have been able to finish his lessons but wants to try. Tristan and Téa ask Yugi to do something, even duel Mai himself but Yugi states in full honesty that this is Joey's decision. Joey agrees to duel, Tristan does tell Joey to remember he's dueling for his sister. As they prepare Joey looks down at the field and asks what kind of setting this is and she says the field is part mountain, part forest and part meadow. Joey then asks Mai why she's dueling, she claims she does this for shopping traveling and money. Joey is unimpressed as she's only after things, most people duel for others.

At the start of the duel, Joey summons Masaki the Legendary Swordsman but Mai is able to summon her Harpie Lady (without looking at the card) and it takes down Joey's monster because it has a field power bonus.

Featured Duel: Joey Wheeler vs. Mai Valentine[]

Monsters compatible with Mountain, Forest or Meadow receive a 30% Field Power Bonus. This includes Beast, Beast-Warrior, Dragon, Insect, Plant, Thunder, Warrior and Winged Beast-Type monsters.

Turn 1: Joey
Joey Normal Summons "Masaki the Legendary Swordsman" (1100 → 1430/1100 → 1430) in Attack Position.

Turn 2: Mai
Mai Normal Summons "Harpie Lady" (1300 → 1690/1400 → 1820) in Attack Position. "Harpie Lady" attacks "Masaki". "Masaki" then loses its Field Power Bonus since it is an EARTH monster battling a WIND monster ("Masaki": 1430 → 1100/1430 → 1100). "Harpie Lady" destroys "Masaki" (Joey: 2000 → 1410 LP). Mai then Sets a card.

Turn 3: Joey
Joey Normal Summons "Tiger Axe" (1300 → 1690/1100 → 1430) in Attack Position. "Tiger Axe" attacks "Harpie Lady". Because "Tiger Axe" is an EARTH monster battling a WIND monster, "Tiger Axe" loses its Field Power Bonus ("Tiger Axe": 1690 → 1300/1430 → 1100). "Harpie Lady" destroys "Tiger Axe" (Joey: 1410 → 1020 LP).

Turn 4: Mai
Mai draws. She then Sets a card ("Cyber Shield").

Turn 5: Joey
Joey draws. He then Sets a monster.

Turn 6: Mai
Mai activates her face-down "Cyber Shield", equipping it to "Harpie Lady" and increasing its ATK and DEF by 500 ("Harpie Lady": 1690 → 2190/1820 → 2320). "Harpie Lady" attacks and destroys Joey's Set "Kojikocy" (1500 → 1950/1200 → 1560).

Turn 7: Joey
Joey draws. He then Normal Summons "Baby Dragon" (1200/700) in Defense Position.

Turn 8: Mai
Mai activates her face-down "Elegant Egotist" to turn one "Harpie Lady" into three "Harpie Ladies" (1300 → 2190/1400 → 2320 for newly Summoned "Harpie Ladies") in Attack Position. None of Mai's monsters can attack during this turn due to "Elegant Egotist's" effect.

Turn 9: Joey
Joey draws "Time Wizard" and subsequently Normal Summons it (500/400) in Attack Position. Joey then activates the effect of "Time Wizard" and succeeds at the effect. Since the effect of "Time Wizard" was activated successfully, "Baby Dragon" is turned into "Thousand Dragon" (2400/2000). Doing this also ages Mai's "Harpie Ladies", reducing their ATK to their original value ("Harpie Ladies": 2190 → 1300/2320). "Thousand Dragon" attacks and destroys all three "Harpie Ladies" (Mai: 2000 → 0 LP).

Differences in adaptations[]

  • Some scenes that showed Mai's cleavage were edited to shorten her cleavage.
  • Mai's "Cyber Shield" (Cyber Bondage) has spikes on the breastplate in the original. In the dub, the spikes are erased.
  • When Yami Yugi is telling Joey the phrase, a glowing eye is added to Yami Yugi's forehead in the dub.
  • The duplicate "Harpie Ladies" have spikes on their breastplates. The spikes are erased in the dub.
