Gate Guardian (ゲート・ガーディアン Gēto Gādian) is an archetype that was introduced to TCG with Metal Raiders set and to the OCG as cards included with the video game Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters II: Dark duel Stories. This archetype received several new cards in the TCG set Metal Raiders (25th Anniversary Edition).

Playing Style[]

With their new support from Metal Raiders (25th Anniversary Edition), the focus of the deck is to place "Kazejin", "Suijin", and "Sanga of the Thunder" in the player's Spell/Trap zones as Continuous Spell Cards, and them banish them to Fusion Summon "Gate Guardian" Fusion Monsters that represent the three components of "Gate Guardian" combined in different ways. The deck's support centers on continuously searching and recycling "Kazejin", "Suijin", and "Sanga of the Thunder" from the banished zone and Deck to play them directly to the field or return them to the player's hand. The "Gate Guardian" Fusion monsters then take control the field with different kinds of control and negation effects.

Aside from continuously summoning "Gate Guardian" Fusion Monsters, the deck simulates the deceptive tactics of the Paradox Brothers when they took advantage of the presence of "Labyrinth Wall" during their duel with Yugi Muto and Joey Wheeler. The Field Spell "Labyrinth Wall Shadow" simulates a monster attacking by destroying an opponent's monster with less than 1600 ATK once per turn, and both "Prey of the Jirai Gumo" and "Labyrinth Heavy Tank" allow the player to destroy opponent's monsters with card effects without attacking. "Labyrinth Wall Shadow" prevents monsters under Level 5 from attacking the turn they are summoned, adding a stalling element.

Aside from archtype specific support, the deck relies on searching out the components of "Gate Guardian" quickly. Cards that support the searching of Fusion Material monsters help, as do cards that support Level 7 monsters, which all three components of "Gate Guardian" are. The component monsters are Thunder, Aqua, and Spellcaster type, so effects that can search out monsters of these types are helpful. The rapid summoning of the components allows the deck access to Rank 7 Monster Cards for Xyz summons. Effects to Special Summon monsters while ignoring their Summoning conditions allow the original "Gate Guardian" or "Dark Guardian" to be summoned directly from the deck as an alternative to amassing the component monsters for Fusion Summoning.
