Template:Anime and Template:Manga can be used to shorten links to the anime and manga subpages.

If it was solely up to me (which it isn't, obviously), I'd delete both templates and hardlink everything. We're not going to go that route.

The templates have been deployed on many pages by now. I'd like to suggest that we use them in prose and only in prose. I believe the links should remain hardlinked whenever Template:Decklist is in use (whether that be an actual Decklist or a featured cards section). Keeping them hardlinked makes alphabetizing much easier and makes editing Decklists look far less threatening to new users.

This leaves things that are not either prose or Decklists up to for debate, I think. One example would be card galleries. I'd naturally prefer to hardlink them there too, but that's open for discussion, as well, all of this.

We also need documentation on these templates and the ability to make (later anime) pages and the other odd delimiters function properly with the templates. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 14:52, September 28, 2016 (UTC)

Addendum: Regardless of the decision, Becasita has offered to do a bot run to correct any current usage to what we decide on.

Just to add on to cheesedude's comment (and to correct a thing or two), the templates are designed to be subst:able, so you can add to a page, and when you save it will be automatically replaced with Dark Magician. So this provides a useful middle ground for anyone who might not want to have the templates used on articles, but still likes the convenience of not having to type the card name out twice, or copy and paste it once (though it's also worth noting that Dark Magician (anime), when saved, also results in Dark Magician; this is a feature of the wiki software instead of a template). In addition, it's already possible to change the disambiguation tag with the templates, by using a third parameter: Dandylion results in a link to Dandylion (later anime). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 15:56, September 28, 2016 (UTC)
I was unaware of both those points. Given that the main argument (I would think) for using the templates is editing convenience, that first point is pretty awesome. We potentially could hardlink everything in this way, but the convenience gained from using the templates wouldn't be lost, if I'm reading this correctly. I'd also like to see both templates deleted.
  • In general, I don't like the idea of using the bracketed text as the name of the template. That's going to cause conflicts if want to create one of these templates for something that already has a template at that name e.g. "card". These templates, if deemed necessary, should be called something like "link manga" or "manga link"; Dark Magician or just "link", so that we don't have to create a template for each piece of text; Dark Magician.
  • The main purposes of templates are to simplify markup and to centralise the markup, so that if an update is needed it only has to be made in one place. These templates aren't needed for either.
    • You can type Dark Magician (manga), which is not much more difficult than Dark Magician. (Granted Dark Magician (manga) will be replaced with Dark Magician on saving.)
    • There is no need to centralise the code for a simple pipe link. Its markup isn't going to change. Even if we decided we want to change the appearance of all links to manga pages, these templates aren't going to help, because they're not used on every link to a manga topic and the ones it can be used on don't all have "(manga)" in their page name for the same reason.
  • Using templates take a small, but in this case unnecessary, extra bit of memory to render the page. You would have to use the templates a lot of times (I don't know precisely how many) on the same page for it to have a noticeable difference. Even if we could regulate this to restrict where, when and how many times the templates can be used, I'd still rather have them both deleted.

Wait, this Dark Magician (anime) works? Sign me up, since it means that I'll still be able to check my card links when I'm typing. Sanokal K-T (talkcontribs) 00:35, September 29, 2016 (UTC)
As for me, I don't have a particular affection for neither of the options. Maybe in the past I had a preference, but not nowadays.
However, I think in the episode galleries, it makes it more readable to have the anime template. Then again, like Deltaneos pointed, not all pages would have "(anime)" on their names, so we would still have some hard linked instances.
I also may prefer to have a more general template to link to pages with dab. Something like would do. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 20:25, October 9, 2016 (UTC)
So, we have a loose consensus here and no objections. Can we move on this, replace the links back to regular ones via a bot run and delete the templates? Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 20:01, November 18, 2016 (UTC)
