Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki

Most of you are aware of the CategorySelect tool that appears at the bottom of the pages, if you are using the Monaco skin. It's to make it easier for newer users to add categories. However on this site I think it's been more troublesome than helpful.

First off we have really little need for the feature. Almost every category we use is added automatically, by either {{Navigation}}, {{CardTable2}}, infoboxes or navboxes. There are some, but very few categories that are added manually. We don't even uses that many categories. We usually use SMW properties to organise pages. (i.e. that stuff that appears in the factboxes at the bottom of pages).

Almost every time I see the CategorySelect being used it's used by someone who doesn't even know what a category is. They're usually adding something silly like Category:My Deck to their user page. Categories that are added automatically aren't mentioned when using the tool, so some people end up adding categories that are already automatically included.

If someone actually did think of a new category we should be using, chances are we could add it automatically and won't need the CategorySelect.

If more people agree and there are no major objections, I'll ask to have it removed. So if you've read this, could you please post your thoughts below. Thank you. -- Deltaneos (talk) 16:14, November 8, 2009 (UTC)

  • In the many pages I've edited, I've never used this feature. And I don't think that someone that edits pages frequently enough won't know how to add an appropriate category anyway, with the tool or without. I vote for the removal of the tool, since it is underused/not used at all. --Darth Covah (Talk | DeckZone | Binder) 11:32, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
  • Lose it. I don't think it's a good idea to have something that introduces another way dumb people can easily screw up pages. Danny Lilithborne 18:10, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
  • then you want to delete all sub-pages as Modo assalto/Archive 1, User:Modo assalto/My Own Decks and that's what I understood? --Modo assalto 18:34, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
    • I think you've misunderstood. Don't worry, you're subpages are safe.
We're talking about removing a feature that appears at the bottom of pages, that users can use to add or remove categories. If you don't understand that's okay. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:42, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
      • my english very very very bad!! so my vote and yes! can remove the button!--Modo assalto 18:52, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
  • I can safely say from my personal experience of removing categories that users include either gibberish, vandalism or titles that aren't supposed to be there. I don't think anyone will miss it after it's removed, so I'm definitely for removing it.PoirotH 18:35, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
  • Remove it. Hardly ever used properly anyway. --Blue (Talk) 18:42, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
  • I agree with the removal as well, as with PoirotH I just usually see it being used to add gibberish or generally pointless titles. --Trivi-AM (talk) 18:50, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
  • Remove it. I bet no one uses it(Except for vandalism) --Reimu-H 21:39, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
  • Honestly, I've never used it. I didn't know it existed until I saw this thread, since I use the Monobook skin. --Deus Ex Machina (Talk) 01:14, November 13, 2009 (UTC)
  • We rarely use categories anyway (with the exception of stuff like Music, Characters, Cards without numbers), but all those can already be found on several pages (whole page on Music, 5dcharacters, and cards without numbers is just a useless category). A lot of accounts/ IPs also use this for (extremely pathetic) vandalism. So it's just causing a lot of trouble. I vote for removal. User:Toob/Talk 02:31, November 13, 2009 (UTC)
  • I agreed with many people above. I saw this tool is rarely used and isn't very helpful for most of people here (except vandalism to pit gibberish things), so remove it. --Blackwings0605 14:00, November 13, 2009 (UTC)
  • I'm in favor of its removal. It is often used wrong, with many pages having wrong categories. I doubt that anyone even uses categories when using/searching the Wiki. DemonGodAsura 07:55, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
