"Evil HERO" (E-HERO (イービルヒーロー) Ībiru Hīrō) is an archetype of Fiend monsters that is a "HERO" sub-archetype used by Jaden Yuki in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime temporarily after being possessed by the Supreme King. They are corrupted versions of Jaden's "Elemental HERO" monsters. Most of the "Evil HERO" monsters are Fusion Summoned by fusing existing "Elemental HERO" monsters with "Dark Fusion" instead of the traditional "Polymerization".

They were released in Gladiator's Assault, but were mainly featured in Duelist Pack: Jaden Yuki 3. The only "Evil HERO" monsters to not have a separate counterpart are "Evil HERO Infernal Gainer" and "Evil HERO Infernal Prodigy".

Prior to the Problem-Solving Card Text rename to distinguish between cards in the "HERO" archetype and cards that simply include "Hero" in their name, cards that support the "HERO" archetype in the OCG instead supported "Elemental Hero", "Destiny Hero" and "Evil Hero" as a group in the TCG ("Masked HERO" and "Vision HERO" had not been released in the TCG at that time). This was the only time "Evil HERO" was treated as an archetype before the release of their first support in Duelist Pack: Legend Duelist 5 in the OCG and Legendary Duelists: Immortal Destiny in the TCG.

Origin[]

The designs of the "Evil HERO" monsters bear some similarity to various demonic superheroes, villains, and antiheroes, such as The Darkness, Hellboy, and Witchblade.

The "Evil HERO" monsters appear to have allusions to Hell. Most of them have the word "Hell" in their Japanese attack/effect names, as well as fire being a prominent feature among them. For example, the attack name of "Inferno Wing" is "Inferno Blast" and its effect name is "Hell Backfire", "Infernal Sniper" (whose Japanese name is "Hell Sniper") has the effect name "Hell Shot". The Japanese names of "Infernal Gainer" and "Malicious Fiend" are "Hell Gainer" and "Malicious Devil" respectively. Additionally, when "Dark Gaia" (whose background appears to be Hell) was Summoned in the anime, a big burst of lava erupted from the ground.

Playing style[]

Like the other "HERO" sub-archetypes, "Evil HERO" decks focus on Fusion Summoning their powerful Fusion Monsters. By default, all "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters must be Special Summoned by "Dark Fusion" instead of the traditional "Polymerization". Arguably the most important piece of the archetype's strategy is "Evil HERO Adusted Gold" who can discard itself to search "Dark Fusion" or a card that mentions it. One other key card is "Dark Calling", which Fusion Summons "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters by banishing the materials from the GY (as well as the hand), akin to "Miracle Fusion". It can also be searched with "Adusted Gold". "Adusted Gold" can be searched by the plethora of "HERO" support cards including "Elemental HERO Stratos" and "Elemental HERO Shadow Mist" (when sent to the GY with cards such as "Vision HERO Vyon").

Since some "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters require specific "Elemental HERO" monsters as Fusion Materials, an "Evil HERO" deck can play very similarly to an "Elemental HERO" deck aside from the additional requirement to search "Dark Fusion". The archetype's related monster, "Xtra HERO Infernal Devicer" helps with the gameplay style of "Evil HERO" decks that run the Fusion Monsters with specific materials, allowing those materials to be searched upon its Link Summon. The card's Link Summon can be easily set up with the "Vision HERO" trio of "Faris", "Increase, and "Vyon" which can mill "Elemental HERO Shadow Mist".

The remaining "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters ("Dark Gaia", "Malicious Fiend" and "Malicious Bane") have more generic materials, allowing a greater range of decks to use it.

For Rock monsters to use for "Dark Gaia", the Hex-Sealed Fusion Fusion Substitute Monsters can be decent choices as they can be used for all of the material-specific "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters as well as "Dark Gaia". "Nibiru, the Primal Being" and "Lord of the Heavenly Prison" are two high ATK and high level Rock monsters that are elligible materials for either "Dark Gaia" or "Malicious Bane" but also have beneficial effects to disrupt the opponent or provide advantage to the user. This ensures that the deck runs such functional choices over monsters like "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior" which otherwise have higher ATK but serve no other useful purposes, making them bricks in the hand.

While the "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters themselves are high ATK high-level Fiend monsters elligible as material for "Dark Gaia", "Malicious Fiend", and "Malicious Bane", other useful candidates to consider are "Lava Golem" and "Radian, the Multidimensional Kaiju" which can get rid of troublesome opposing monsters.

"Supreme King's Castle" allows for more versatility in what cards can summon the "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters, ranging from the commonly used "Polymerization" to the devastating likes of "Super Polymerization" of using an opponent's monster as material (which helps when summoning one of the non-material-specific "Evil HERO" Fusion Monsters, especially "Malicious Bane"). It also acts as a unique version of “Skyscraper", sending an "Evil HERO" monster from the Deck or Extra Deck (allows dumping of useful cards such as "Evil HERO Sinister Necrom") to provide an ATK boost to Fiend monsters.

Adding the support of "Elemental HERO Honest Neos" can also help add major attack and counter strength to the deck as discarding it will allow an "Evil HERO" or even one of the non-fusion "HERO" monsters to gain a large attack boost of 2500 ATK. This will help protect weaker monsters, deal unexpected damage from the non-fusion "HERO" monsters, and power up monsters like "Evil HERO Inferno Wing" which can make use of its piercing damage effect. After this usage, it can be used once more as a material for Summoning "Malicious Bane".

While the archetype has cards that support all Fiend monsters in general, "Evil HERO" generally function at their best when used with other "HERO" cards.

Weaknesses[]

  • Similar to most other "HERO" sub-archetypes, "Evil HERO" is primarily a battle-focused archetype and has little capability of disrupting the opponent during their turn.
