Errata are changes to a card's description or effect wording, usually to make the card rulings easier to understand for the players. On rare occasions, an Errata will correct other things such as ATK or Attribute.

Players are not required to own or use the most recent erratum of a card, although it is strongly recommended by Konami to do so to prevent confusion.

As a general rule, any card which is rereleased in a booster pack will receive an errata. This is particularly true of very old cards introduced before Problem-Solving Card Text.

In January 2015, several Forbidden cards such as "Crush Card Virus", "Sinister Serpent", "Temple of the Kings", etc. received a previously-unseen form of errata; one where their effects were reworded entirely not just to make them easier to understand, but to change the effects completely in order to make them less "Broken" - potentially to give reason for them to be removed from being permanent fixtures on the Forbidden/Limited List. Whether this will become a set precedent is unknown.
