A counter (Japanese: カウンター Kauntā) is a generic marker that can be put on cards. They can only be placed on cards with specific effect, and the type of counters vary between cards.

There are official Counters in form of cards. But players also commonly use small objects, such as coin, beads, and dice to represent counters.

Playstyle

Counters are generally placed on card(s) for specific effect, varying from ATK/DEF modification, prevent destruction/damage, as cost for futher effect(s), or gain effect simply by having counters etc. Many of these effects also amplify based on the number of placed counters or amount of removed counters; the more counters, the more effect.

Counters can be specific to a single card, specifically shared through a series/archetype, or span through a large group of similar cards.

Notable archetypes revolving around counters include: "Alien", "Cloudian", "Mythical Beast", "Predaplant" and "Venom".
