Yu-Gi-Oh!

In the dub of episode 2 of the second series anime, Solomon puts up a poster featuring "Black Luster Soldier" and "Harpie's Pet Dragon". In the Japanese version, "Celtic Guardian" and "Hercules Beetle" are in the poster.

In the first match of the Duelist Kingdom Finals (inside Pegasus' Castle), Yugi summoned this card and attacked, destroying Mai's "Harpie's Pet Dragon" and prompting Mai to surrender as there was nothing she could do to win the duel now.

The card was featured twice in the Virtual World. Yugi fuses the monster with Kaiba's "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" to create "Dragon Master Knight", which destroys the "Five-Headed Dragon" used against them. In the Virtual World arc, it is used to fend off Gozaburo Kaiba's monsters as the gang makes their escape.

This card was also used in Yami and Kaiba's tag-team duel against Dartz. It was later fused into "Dragon Master Knight". After he was separated from his dragon with "De-Fusion". It was destroyed along with "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" by two of the four "Mirror Knight Tokens". This card would later be used again against the Great Leviathan.

Atem fuses himself with "Black Luster Soldier", and then with "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon", during the final stages of the battle with Zorc Necrophades, in an attempt to destroy Zorc. This is only done in the Anime, as the "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" was not present during this fight in the Manga.

In the Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters, there is Duel Armor that uses "Black Luster Soldier" and "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". It fuses with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to give the armor's user the ability to destroy Dragons as long as the user has the "Sword of Divinity" with them.

Its attack name is Chaos Blade in both versions.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

This card appears in the GX Japanese closing song, Borderline Battle.

This is one of the cards Yugi uses when Jaden Yuki activates the Spell Card "Subspatial Battle" in the final duel of the series.

Naming

In the Spanish dub of the Anime, this card was known as "Soldado del Fulgor Negro".
