"Battlin' Boxing", known as "Burning Knuckle" (バーニングナックル Bāningu Nakkuru) in Japanese, is an archetype that supports the "Battlin' Boxer" archetype.
Play style & Recommendations[]
The oldest card in the series, "Spirits," combos well with "Headgeared", "Glassjaw", "King Dempsey", and "Uppercutter". The effect to Special Summon a "Battlin' Boxer" from the GY has a lot of synergy with the aforementioned cards. You can use this card after Normal Summoning "Headgeared" to Special Summon the "Battlin' Boxer" you just sent to the GY with its effect. And if you just sent "Glassjaw," you can utilize its effect to retrieve a "Battlin' Boxer" back to your hand and then proceed to revive "Glassjaw" from your GY. A similar result is seen with "Uppercutter," which can Special Summon a "Battlin' Boxer" from the GY upon being sent to the GY by a card effect. "King Dempsey" can search this card from the deck. In a pinch, the player could use its effect for the sole purpose of loading the GY with a "Battlin' Boxer" only to use "Spirits" to revive said card from the GY. Overall, this card serves the archetype well by adding some much needed speed and helps to extend some of the better combos the archetype is capable of pulling off.
"Cross Counter" is a welcome addition to the series. This card pairs well with "King Dempsey" as it can search it straight from the deck and in later turns, the player can use the effect of "Uppercutter" to set the card back onto the field from the GY. If timed right, "Dempsey" can detach "Uppercutter" as a Chain to an opponent's card activation very late in the opponent's Main Phase 2 to have it live when you begin your next turn. This increases the odds of the card surviving the opponent's turn while mitigating much of the risk of the requirement of trap cards to be set the turn before they can be activated. Additionally, as a Counter Trap, the opponent will not be able to respond to it with Quick Effects of Monsters and Spells which seem to dominate today's meta. It must be noted that the player must control an Xyz "Battlin' Boxer" or "Number" monster and not just a Main Deck "Battlin' Boxer" in order to use "Cross Counter." Additionally, the effect of destroying your own "Battlin' Boxer" is a condition for getting the negate off. Therefore, using "Lead Yoke" to attempt to circumvent this cost by proxy will not work. However, the effect of replacing your destroyed monster and the recent support the archetype received more than offset the seemingly situational nature of this card to the uninformed player. Overall, this card provides the archetype a much-needed way to interrupt opponents' combos while also providing additional destructive power.
"Ring Announcer" will likely prove to be instrumental in extending plays in similar ways to "Spirits." Initially, it seems it will combo well with "Glassjaw," "Uppercutter" and "King Dempsey," letting you Special Summon the "Battlin' Boxer" you just added. Overall, it seems it will add even more swarm and destructive potential to the "Battlin' Boxer" archetype.
Generally, the player will want to search out these cards from the deck with the effect of "King Dempsey" to thin the deck and develop hand and field advantage.
