I try to look for as little duels as possible, unless it's something super significant (like Lightning vs Revolver). When there are duels, I'd like to see it more as either a way for the characters to fight out their differences, to get revenge, or to kill someone.
Well-built characters, compelling story, no plot holes, character development, and a meaning to the story. (That's really what I look for in any sort of story, not just fanfics.)

The reason Dm didn't follow the rules was bc is was made before there were any. There were no rules to follow, that's why that one card's "floatation ring" was cut off.
Honestly, the yugioh creators (except Takahashi) really need to learn how to write better shows. They keep advertising as their first priority, which makes it lose almost all of its potential.
